Teacher Allanah Benton-Wells, 42, Accused of Sex With 6th Grader - Williams Elementary School - Flint, Michigan
Ever wonder what's wrong with our public schools? Here's a good example: Allanah Benton-Wells, 42, was suspended from her job--with pay--teaching 6th grade at Williams Elementary School in Flint, Michigan back in November of 2007, while the district and cops investigated allegations that she had sex with a student. That's nine months of paid vacation, AFTER the boy's mother made a complaint to police. That came after the mom intercepted a phone call between the two that made her think Benton-Wells (pictured right in court) was having sex with the 12-year-old. Cops think on at least two occasions around Halloween that Benton-Wells picked up the boy to take him to her home for tutoring and instead had sex with him.
In January, Benton-Wells husband divorced her because he suspected something was going on when he came home at 2:30 in the morning and found the boy on the couch, with his wife, with his shirt off. Another time, the her ex-husband claims he came home to find the pair on the couch with his wife wearing a nightgown and no bra. Not if that means she was sleeping with the boy, but it does seem kinda strange when she was supposed to be turoring him. But still, it took ALL this time for charges to be filed and the school district to finally fire Benton-Wells.
Here's more on the story from NBC 25:
In November of last year investigators started looking into allegations, 42-year-old Allanah Benton-Wells had sex with the 12-year-old in October.
"Both times she was to pick the child up and take him back to her house for tutoring, help with homework,” said Genesee County Prosecutor, David Leyton. “We believe that's not what occurred. We believe in both instances resulted in sexual intercourse."
Investigators say the boy's mother found out about the sexual relationship, when she listened in on a call between her son and Benton-Wells. “The mother then went to the school, the principal, of the school then informed Flint Police."
Benton-Wells is a Flint native a mother of 19 month old twin boys, and two grown sons. Now she faces two charges of criminal sexual assault, each crime carries a sentence of 25 years to life behind bars. “She is entering a plea of not guilty," said Michael Haley, Benton-Wells’ attorney. “He was a student and she was helping him."
