Teacher's Aide Accused of Sex With Special Needs Student

What's the difference between Special Ed and Special Needs? Not really sure (maybe a reader can explain it to us in the comments area below) but either way, instructional aide Stacey Goodloe, 35 faces charges of illicit sex with a minor. Here's more from MSNBC:

A woman who worked as an instructional aide with special needs students in Ceres was arrested Monday on charges of illicit sex with a minor. Stacey Goodloe, 35, worked for the Ceres Unified School District for four years. Ceres police said the boy, now 16, was 15 at the time. The alleged relationship took place in 2008 during the school year. Goodloe worked with special needs students. Police said the student involved in the alleged relationship was among that group. The school district said the alleged acts didn't happen on school grounds.

  1. Technically, there is no difference. In my district(where I teach Special Ed), Special Ed is usually a term applied to the entire special services umbrella - it can include learning disabilities, behavioral disabilities, and more severe disabilities such as Autism and mental retardation. Special needs generally implies a physical disability in addition to those or special needs like therapeutic or health services. Long answer - but that's my take.

  2. Special Ed is for the kids who are retarded, severely autistic, or otherwise unable to learn in a normal setting.

Special Needs, however, includes anything from special ed, as above, to special academic programs for very bright students. It also includes students with relatively minor disabilities, such as dyslexia, or ADHD.

Alex is 100% wrong. Special Education is (like Jed said), the entire blanket of sevices: from a small speech impediment to severe physical, emotional or intellectual disabilities. Special needs is when a person has physical, emotional or intellectual disabilities that are so severe they need assistance to function in school or society. Mental Retardation, Down Syndrome would both be examples of Special Needs populations. Special Education doesn't necessarily have anything to do with intellectual capability. FYI Alex, the word retarded simply means "slow"- not mentally, just slow. That's why they put the word "Mentally" in front of it. Retarded isn't really an adjective in our society, at least not for the educated.
