Drunk Woman Arrested for Breast Feeding Baby

If you breast feed your kid and your drunk, is that like serving them booze?

Police responding to a domestic disturbance arrived at Stacey Anvarinia's home to find the mother breast-feeding her 6-week-old baby in front of them. And she was drunk, they said.

Officers arrested the woman, who later pleaded guilty to child neglect and faces up to five years in prison. Now her case has touched off a debate among moms about breast-feeding, alcohol — and privacy.

Since Anvarinia's arrest, blogs have been abuzz with comments questioning whether breast-feeding mothers could risk criminal charges if they drink even modest amounts. Authorities insist police were right to make the arrest, even if the mother had not been breast-feeding, out of concern for the child's welfare.

"Since when is breast-feeding while drunk a crime?" said Dr. Amy Tuteur, a retired obstetrician and gynecologist in Boston who has been following the case on her Web site, the Skeptical OB.

Breast feeding while drunk is a crime because you're giving alcohol to that infant. Shouldn't an OB freaking know that. What an ass.

I heard from an expert at La Leche League that even when a mother is drunk - a harmful amount of alcohol does not reach the nursing baby. If they had given the baby a blood test, they would have found this mother did no harm to her child. This mother should have been warned, not prosecuted.

What a selfish boob - everyone knows that what you consume shows in breastmilk - be it toxins, or chemicals, vitimins, or booze as we have it here. In any event, caring for children requires attention and while impaired you cannot drive a car, fly a plane, so why should the life of an infant or child in a parents care be any different - hoping she was not smoking at the same time that would be insult to injury inflicted on a child
