Jody Lovekin, 48, 2936 S. County Road 800 East, is charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated. The misdemeanor offense was elevated to a Class D felony due to a prior drunk-driving conviction within the past five years, police said. Sheriff's Deputy Derek Allen was on Indiana 4 near Fish Lake at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday when he spotted a vehicle a radar gun revealed was traveling 16 miles per hour along the highway's edge. The officer got closer, then realized the slow-moving vehicle was a golf cart.SOURCE: Man in golf cart arrested on OWI
Because of a new state law that prevents golf carts on roadways, police said a traffic stop was made, and it was discovered Lovekin had been drinking. A certified test later revealed a .15 percent blood alcohol level.

A woman in southwest Florida has been arrested after deputies say she assaulted her husband for complaining about her cooking. A Lee County Sheriff's Office arrest report shows 66-year-old Meredith Hart Mulcahy of Bonita Springs was charged with battery on an elderly person Tuesday night. Deputies say her husband, 71-year-old Richard Johnson, got into an argument with her about undercooked potatoes and burnt bread. He went to the bedroom and began eating, and authorities say Mulcahy then threw a phone at him. Deputies say she became belligerent in the back seat of the patrol car and earlier yelled, "she burned the bread she was cooking because she was so intoxicated." She was in the Lee County Jail on Wednesday pending a $1,500 bond.

Dozens of graves at Burr Oak Cemetery were desecrated by workers as part of a financial scheme, authorities say.
Dozens of graves at Burr Oak Cemetery were desecrated by workers as part of a financial scheme, authorities say. Cook County authorities began investigating the cemetery about six weeks ago after receiving a call from the owners of Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois, located about 20 miles south of Chicago. The owners had concerns about possible "illegalities going on" regarding finances at the business, said Sheriff Tom Dart. "What we found was beyond startling and revolting," Dart told reporters at the cemetery.
The workers at Burr Oak, where lynching victim Emmett Till, blues legend Dinah Washington and some Negro League baseball players are buried among others, allegedly resold the plots, disinterred the bodies, dumped the remains and pocketed the cash, Dart said.
Police responding to a domestic disturbance arrived at Stacey Anvarinia's home to find the mother breast-feeding her 6-week-old baby in front of them. And she was drunk, they said.Mom Arrested for Breast-Feeding Drunk Sets Off Heated Debate [Fox News]
Officers arrested the woman, who later pleaded guilty to child neglect and faces up to five years in prison. Now her case has touched off a debate among moms about breast-feeding, alcohol — and privacy.
Since Anvarinia's arrest, blogs have been abuzz with comments questioning whether breast-feeding mothers could risk criminal charges if they drink even modest amounts. Authorities insist police were right to make the arrest, even if the mother had not been breast-feeding, out of concern for the child's welfare.
"Since when is breast-feeding while drunk a crime?" said Dr. Amy Tuteur, a retired obstetrician and gynecologist in Boston who has been following the case on her Web site, the Skeptical OB.

She was stopped at a security checkpoint outside a courtroom, like everyone else, and an X-ray machine revealed she had a solid metal object in her book bag, authorities said. Sheriff's Deputy Jennifer Matthews asked about it, but Dobbin said she knew nothing about such an object in her back, authorities say. When the deputy opened the bag, she found a 9mm — loaded with 10 live rounds and equipped with a laser pointer.

"I'm told there was a lock on the refrigerator and there was more beer than food in that fridge," said Sgt. Ed Wessing, spokesperson for the Mesa Police Department.
Police said they saw the younger child go directly to the pantry and start eating dog food.
“We don’t know if this child routinely eats dog food, but I can tell you when our officers felt bad enough they went and purchased food themselves out of their own money and brought it to these kids, they ate it like they were extremely hungry," said Sgt. Wessing. "It's unbelievable, those poor little things. I just can't imagine," said Joann Duplessis, a neighbor.
Samantha Abernathy, 20, the children’s mother, was booked for child endangerment. Investigators said Abernathy, who worked at Centerfold Cabaret, claimed to have left around 2 a.m. on Sunday to help a friend. Court records show she returned at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday -- nearly 9 hours later -- and did not find anyone to watch her kids.
"How could you possibly leave a 2 and 3-year old alone for five minutes, let alone more than eight hours, and that’s what she's admitting to. It could be longer,” said Sgt. Wessing. “How many times has this happened?"
