Former Mayor/Principal's Wife Accused of Sexual Contact With One of His Students, 14 - Linda Lusk
First off, this isn't the first time we've heard a lawyer say "The truth will come out" after a story breaks that makes their client look really guilty. Unfortunately, we can't ever remember a case when "the truth" really did come out later to exonerate someone in a case like this. It's just something lawyers say before they tell their clients to plead guilty. Second, there's lots of detail in this story, but here are the basics as we understand it: Linda Lusk, 49, used to be the mayor or Prosser, WA and is currently married to the principal at Prosser High School, the same place where the boy she's accused of having inappropriate contact with goes to school (ouch!). According to reports the two exchanged increasingly inappropriate texts over several months, including an allegedly topless picture she sent to him. On April 28, the kid had only a half day of school, so he walked over to Lusk's nearby house where--according to police reports--she led him into the bedroom and "eventually touched his penis and asked him to touch her breasts, which he did." Later she felt guilty and went to talk to the boys parents, not realizing that junior had already likely bragged to his friends which got the attention of police who showed up at Lusk's house two hours later.
Lusk, a Tyee High School graduate, is accused of sexting and having sexual relations with a 14-year-old boy. But her attorney said there's more to the story. "Linda has a story to tell, and I think it's pretty compelling story to tell. And some day, her version will be told. Now's not the time, but the truth of what happened will come out," said attorney Scott Johnson. Johnson refused to elaborate as the investigation is ongoing. "There's a lot of rumor and innuendo, but I can tell you 99 percent of that is just untrue," she said. "Once all the investigation is done and once Linda gets a chance to tell her side, the actual truth will come out."
According to the statement of probable cause, the boy was questioned by his parents after they heard from Lusk. "She stated to me that she had grown very fond of my son over the past few years, and that he was a very great kid," the victim's mother wrote in the request for a protection order. "She informed me they had been texting each other for quite some time, and it had really gotten out of hand the past few months. She told me that it was inappropriate on her part and that she was sick to her stomach."
The boy told his parents "he had been exchanging texts with the defendant for a period of time," and that she had "sent him one text with a picture of herself partially undressed," the statement said. The boy said he "went to defendant's house during his lunch hour on an early release day" in April. "The juvenile, the 14-year-old boy, went to the defendant's house, she brought him into the bedroom and had sexual contact at that time," said Benton County Prosecutor Andy Miller.

So there's the ol' legal quagmire: When is a person legally old enough to make these decisions? 18 is arbitrary -- there are 14 year olds who are more mature than 21 year old's, and vice-versa. To compound the complexity of said quagmire, what about the example I suggested where someone does this when they're 14, and never regrets it for the rest of their lives? Apparently they were old enough to make a mature decision, and DID.
Of course I'm skirting the issue of what's *wrong* with the heads of the teachers/coaches/whatever who are doing it.

Some of you may want to investigate the whole innocent until proven guilty thing. It only applies to how government can treat you, not whether you actually committed a crime, or whether people can have an opinion.

I'm offended that adult women are treated like children incapable of taking responsibility for their actions, while underage boys are expected to take responsibility for their decisions like adult men.
The laws against statutory rape are there because minors are judged to be too young to figure in all the consequences of having sex with adults. It has NOTHING to do with whether the minor enjoyed the sex or willingly participated or not.
The hormonal drive of teens to want sex is far in front of their mental and emotional maturity; so they are vulnerable to exploitation from adults in this regard. THAT is what the law is to protect minors from.
Or are adult women less capable of making decisions on an adult level than boys barely into their teens? If so, then take away women's vote.
If not, then treat women equally as harshly as a man in the same situation--which, believe it or not, is possible. Under-aged female victims should not automatically be considered to have been pressured into sex; they could have participated willingly in sex with an adult man and enjoyed it, just as boys can with women.
No matter the gender of offender and victim, the adult committed a crime and should be punished for it. The minor claiming to be unaffected doesn't touch the reason for the law. It is irrelevant.

Probably the only way this kid will actually suffer psychologically later in life because of everyone's reaction to this situation. People are probably going to go so excessively over the top and have such an outrageous reaction towards him and this experience (crucify her, make him go through counseling, constantly telling him how wrong and totally fucked up what happened to him was) that hes going to end up being convinced either by himself or others that he was traumatically raped and his life was destroyed by this experience.

Do you even recognize a problem? If you do, then what's the solution?
Set a minimum age limit? That's already in place. You can argue that it's too high, or that some minors are more mature than others, but if a line has to be drawn on age, then adults have a legal duty to follow the law and should be made to face the legal consequences if they don't--otherwise the law has no teeth and can be ignored.

The article above never stated they had sex. They probably did, but it doesn't say they did.

There are no victems here except her husband. She cheated on him. But for all we know they have an open relationship and he already knew what was going on. In my personal opinion, it's the soceity who always think that a child is a child and that a child cannot be equally responsible for his/her action. Soceity always rubberstamps and plays "innocence" games in this kind of situation. Yes, a child is minor and an adult is an adult but most children do know what they are doing if they were to be willing-party into the action. Thus, they should equally be responsible and should be punished. Why always all blames go to an adult as if a minor did nothing wrong because of his/her age? Again this is what soceity playing the tricky games than the reality.
In this news, a 14 years old boy knew why he was kept exchanging all those text msgs especially for so long, he knew why he was going to this lady's house especially in the absence of her husband, he could have refused the woman to touch him and touching her which he didn't do. He also got pleasure as what he was looking for but this poor woman be going to jail??? This is ridicolous. I bet, no police get involved if laws equally put minor to be responsible too because then this boy's parents would have shut up and forget everything rather than seeing his son in the jail too.
